Question
What does the word Zion mean and what are its origins? (I was asked this by my Rastafarian friend.)
Answer
The name Zion holds the secret to the power of Israel. If you understand this name, you understand the magic of the Holy Land.
The word Zion appears 154 times in the Hebrew Bible and has several connotations. Zion can refer to the Land of Israel, the city of Jerusalem or the Temple. But the actual meaning of the word is puzzling. Translated literally, tzion means a "sign" or an "icon".
A sign is always indication of something else. When you see a sign that says "dentist", you know that the sign itself is not the dentist, it merely points out that a dentist is here; same with an icon. When you see an icon on a website, it is not the icon itself that has any use. It is there to click on and it directs you to another page. A sign is never there for itself. It is there to alert our attention, to make us aware of, or to lead us to, some other reality.
So too with the Land of Israel. It is a sign pointing upwards. It is the icon that you click on to be directed to G-d. The very existence of the Land of Israel points to a Higher Force. The beauty of the land, the magic of Jerusalem, the holiness of the Temple Mount are all indicators of a Higher Presence.
The awe felt when entering the Old City of Jerusalem is not due to its impressive buildings, for it has none. It is not due to its sense of history, though that too is fascinating. It is due to the sense of something bigger than life itself that fills the air. You walk the land and you sense G-d's presence. The Holy Land is a sign pointing upwards to G-d.
You can't avoid G-d in Israel. You can seek Him out or run away from Him, but you can't stay neutral. G-d is too real to ignore in Israel. Whether one is a believer or not, whether one admits it or not, the magic of Israel is divine. That's why it's called Zion, a "sign" of the One Above.

Totally Unrelated!
Totally unrelated...but I want my voice heard!!
The new guidelines for mammograms for women "not being needed" as often...is a disaster!!! As a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed during a routine mammogram I think this is outrageous!! A new medical standard or just cost saving???

Those of you who follow this blog on a regular basis will notice that I have added prayers for the Zion Oil and Gas Company. If God would provide oil for the Holy Land it would be of utmost benefits to the people and the land. Many believe that Scripture points to oil being found in the last days. This passage is packed with God’s covenant with Israel. It gives us a glimpse of how heavy His heart is for the apple of His eye. It is one of so many from Genesis to Revelation that convey and confirm His plans and purposes to reveal and glorify Himself through His chosen people.
Yet remarkably, many Christians compartmentalize the topic of Israel as though it were simply another option on a menu of church programs, leaving it to others to delve into the scripture passages that tell of God’s love for a land and people wrapped in a seemingly complex conflict half a world away.
But this passage doesn’t give us that luxury, to be able to choose if we want to be in, or out, of that group of people that are to give themselves no rest over Jerusalem. Not everyone is Called to be one of the watchmen mentioned in the previous passage, but the Lord clearly defines this special category of people that He commands to give Him no rest until He makes Jerusalem the praise of all the earth. . . They who call on the Lord.

Those of you who follow this blog on a regular basis will notice that I have added prayers for the Zion Oil and Gas Company. If God would provide oil for the Holy Land it would be of utmost benefits to the people and the land. Many believe that Scripture points to oil being found in the last days. “I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth.” Isaiah 62:6-7
This passage is packed with God’s covenant with Israel. It gives us a glimpse of how heavy His heart is for the apple of His eye. It is one of so many from Genesis to Revelation that convey and confirm His plans and purposes to reveal and glorify Himself through His chosen people.
Yet remarkably, many Christians compartmentalize the topic of Israel as though it were simply another option on a menu of church programs, leaving it to others to delve into the scripture passages that tell of God’s love for a land and people wrapped in a seemingly complex conflict half a world away.
But this passage doesn’t give us that luxury, to be able to choose if we want to be in, or out, of that group of people that are to give themselves no rest over Jerusalem. Not everyone is Called to be one of the watchmen mentioned in the previous passage, but the Lord clearly defines this special category of people that He commands to give Him no rest until He makes Jerusalem the praise of all the earth. . . They who call on the Lord.
Pray for Jerusalem, Beersheba, Tel Aviv and Haifa. Pray for the peace of Israel.

Isaiah 62:6-7
“I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth.” Isaiah 62:6-7
This passage is packed with God’s covenant with Israel. It gives us a glimpse of how heavy His heart is for the apple of His eye. It is one of so many from Genesis to Revelation that convey and confirm His plans and purposes to reveal and glorify Himself through His chosen people.
Yet remarkably, many Christians compartmentalize the topic of Israel as though it were simply another option on a menu of church programs, leaving it to others to delve into the scripture passages that tell of God’s love for a land and people wrapped in a seemingly complex conflict half a world away.
But this passage doesn’t give us that luxury, to be able to choose if we want to be in, or out, of that group of people that are to give themselves no rest over Jerusalem. Not everyone is Called to be one of the watchmen mentioned in the previous passage, but the Lord clearly defines this special category of people that He commands to give Him no rest until He makes Jerusalem the praise of all the earth. . . They who call on the Lord.
Pray for Jerusalem, Beersheba, Tel Aviv and Haifa. Pray for the peace of Israel.

Pray for Tiberias, Migdol, Nazarath. Pray for the peace of Israel.

Scripture: Is. 43:1 But now thus says the LORD, who created you O Jacob, and He who formed you O Israel' "fear not for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name, you are Mine."
Pray for: Israeli and USA government officials who are speaking about forming two nations Palestine, and Israel, to solve the problem in the area. Never in Scripture is there any indication about giving the land away. Pray for the peace of Israel.

Days of Prayer for Israel 3/1 - 3/5/09
I always pray for Israel. God loves Israel and so should we.
With this entry, I begin to write a blog series about praying for Israel. It is exerpted from my new book, "40 Days of Prayer for Israel." For each day there will be a Scripture that shows how much God loves Israel, followed by a modern geographical area to be prayed for, and occasionally, specific people in Israel to pray for. For instance... this is my first entry. I hope this will encourage you to pray for the land and people of Israel on a regular basis.

Scripture - Psalm 122:6 "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. May they prosper who love you."
This is the headlines from the Jerusalem Post for 3/1: "Kassam hits open area in western Negev; no casualties reported." "Askelon also fired upon." Pray that the southern region will be protected from rockets.
Pray for the peace and safety of the Holy Land.

Scripture:Ex. 3:18b, 22..."the LORD God of the Hebrews has met with us.... Israel MY son, MY firstborn...."
Today pray for Sderot and Netivot. Pray that the Northern Galilee will be protected from rockets. Jerusalem Post reports - "Israel's prime minister threatened "uncompromising" retaliation against Gaza militants Sunday as Palestinian rocket fire persists six weeks after Israeli forces halted an offensive meant to end the attacks. Pray for the Peace of Israel.

I just got to thinking about the young military people I met in Israel a few short months ago. Several young men and women that posed with us for pictures at the Southern Steps; I think they were a tank unit. We laughed with them as they had a short foot-race up the steps.
Also I remembered three beautiful Israli Navy women who posed with us at the Western Wall. Our tour guide, Ido, told them that I was retired Navy and they were more than happy to stop and pose with me. I have their pics on my computer and see their smiling faces several times a day as the pics scroll over the screen. They all need our prayers today.
Pray for the Israeli Defense Force (IDF).

Scripture: Amos 9:13-15 "Behold the days are coming...I will bring back the captives of MY people Israel; they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; they shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them. I will plant them in their land, and no longer shall they be pulled up from the land I have given them," says the LORD your God.
Pray for: Ashkelon and Ashdod. Pray for the 'two' capitals of Israel- Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Pray for the Peace of Israel.

Scripture: Deut. 32:8-10 "When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when He separated the sons of man, He set the bounaries of the peoples according to the number of sons of Israel. For the LORD'S portion is His people; Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance. He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of a wilderness; He encircled him, He cared for him, He guarded him as the pupil of his eye.
Pray for: Nahal Oz and other Israeli cities near the Gaza border Pray for Kiryat Malchi, Israeli city bombed 12/30. Pray for the peace of Israel.
